Manila hemp, or abaca, is a commercially valuable fiber obtained from abaca. Manila hemp can be used to make rope, submarine cable, twine, and coarse cloth. Cut off the abaca petiole, split it longitudinally, and remove a few strands of material to obtain manila hemp fiber. Then these fibers are washed, dried, and bundled. Manila rope is very tough and has strong corrosion resistance to salt water.
Manila rope is generally used in professional tug-of-war competitions, and the current market is dominated by Bengal hemp rope.
